At GOLDFOR10, we love gold in all shapes and sizes. In the spirit of the upcoming Sochi Olympic Games, here are some fun facts about our favorite kind of medal - the coveted gold medal.
An Olympic Gold Medal from the 2012 London Games |
- Gold medals are NOT made out of solid gold since 1912. How disappointing ! They are mostly made of silver. However, to be qualified as a gold medal, they are required to contain 6 g of gold. In fact, the Albertville 1992 Olympic medal was mostly made of glass.
- The design for each Olympic Games is entirely up to the host nation.
- In 2008 U.S. Olympic swimmer Brendan Henson lost his gold medal on a plane. It was later returned to him by passenger that had found it.
- Jesse Owens' Olympic gold that he won at the 1936 Berlin games sold for $1.4 million. I seriously wish I would have found that one on a plane.
