Olympic Gold Medals : Fun Facts

At GOLDFOR10, we love gold in all shapes and sizes.  In the spirit of the upcoming Sochi Olympic Games, here are some fun facts about our favorite kind of medal - the coveted gold medal.

An Olympic Gold Medal from the 2012 London Games

  • Gold medals are NOT made out of solid gold since 1912.  How disappointing ! They are mostly made of silver. However, to be qualified as a gold medal, they are required to contain 6 g of gold.  In fact, the Albertville 1992 Olympic medal was mostly made of glass.
  • The design for each Olympic Games is entirely up to the host nation.
  • In 2008 U.S. Olympic swimmer Brendan Henson lost his gold medal on a plane.  It was later returned to him by passenger that had found it.
  • Jesse Owens' Olympic gold that he won at the 1936 Berlin games sold for $1.4 million.  I seriously wish I would have found that one on a plane.
